Laser Processing

Laser processing involves the use of high power lasers to cut, weld, mark, engrave or alter surface texture.

Laser processing impacts all major sectors including:

Aerospace & Automotive             Solar & Photovoltaics

Electronics & Optoelectronics      Scientific & Medical

Agriculture & Environmental       Defence & Security

CPE’s team at Bangor are experts in the field of super-resolution imaging as well laser processing – e.g. laser cutting, welding, engraving, texturing. Their labs are home to a range of various lasers allowing them to carefully tailor the laser processing parameters to any material.

Collaborations through CPE have seen the team work on laser processing of material such as polymer film, paper, stainless steel and diamond.

The team, lead by Dr James Wang, has pioneered a new high resolution approach that enables them to make laser marks down to the nanometre scale, whilst using this same technology to image the markings.

Specific applications include:

  • Laser cutting
  • Laser marking
  • Laser engraving
  • Laser welding
  • Laser cleaning or surface texturing
